Howard Family House II
Design competition and proposal for a house in northern Pennsylvania, USA.
We recommend demolishing the existing structure, as it no longer meets current needs and would entail high maintenance costs. The architectural design consists of two modules converging at a single point, creating an interior courtyard and a large cantilever.
The house's main volume aligns with the waterfall, while a small bedroom and a study face the opposite direction. The main volume houses the entrance, pantry, kitchen, dining area, living spaces, and circulation paths. The staircase serves as the project's backbone, guiding visitors through the house and down toward the river.
A large cantilever projects toward the waterfall, creating an impressive terrace. This allows the main wing to enjoy a spectacular view of the site while framing the landscape. Exposed concrete, carefully modulated to provide clarity and structural rigor, was used throughout.
Woodwork is featured throughout the house, creating an elegant, warm, and sophisticated atmosphere. The project honors the rich heritage of the Howard Family Trust while delivering bold, modern architecture that respects the landscape.
