Competition for the Expansion of the World Trade Organization (WTO)

The World Trade Organization (WTO) launched an international ideas competition for its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The WTO currently has 153 members, 117 of which are developing countries, including Mexico.

The competition called for the addition of a new annex and the preservation of the existing building. The program consists of: 300 workstations, a library, a print shop, service areas, and parking for 200 cars.

Our proposal is a juxtaposition of volumes representing the five continents..

The structures are clearly defined and come together in a restrained composition. These volumes suggest to the observer the complexities of trade, which, likewise, can always be resolved peacefully and within the rule of law.

The project embodies the following principles:

  • Transparency and openness to dialogue.
  • Simple forms that exemplify intelligent solutions to complex regulatory challenges.
  • Low energy consumption, environmental responsibility, and concern for global warming.
  • Respect for the immediate surroundings.
  • A simple and elegant solution.

Glass is the predominant material in the project; it unifies the design and lends the project an ethereal quality. Its transparency speaks to communication, openness, and goodwill.
