Competition
“Observation Tower, Museum, and Access to the Grjótagjá Caves”
Grjótagjá, Iceland 2020
An ideas competition organized by Bee Breeders for an observation tower, museum, and entrance to the Vogagjá fissures in Grjótagjá, Iceland. Bee Breeders para una torre de observación, museo e ingreso a las grietas de Vogagjá en Grjótagjá, Islandia.
The collision of the European and North American tectonic plates over thousands of years has carved out the fissures and two large caves.
These have become popular tourist attractions due to their hot springs.
The caves receive thousands of visitors each year, and although the site is remote, the surrounding lava fields have suffered significant deterioration.
The project called for: a viewing platform to mark the site, a future entrance to the caves, rest areas, and a modular solution for walking trails.
Our proposal: “A Volcano of Light”
The proposal incorporates the rocky terrain as a structure from whose crater an observation tower rises.
We researched local architecture and adapted the concept of the “green roof,” proposing a structure that harmonizes with the landscape.
The central space is illuminated by a glass canopy featuring a staircase and an elevator that leads to the top of the observation deck.
The central space is surrounded by a corridor that connects the various areas of the facility.
The project includes an observation tower, a museum, a gift shop, a café, restrooms, and space for future expansion.
The elevator staircase is inspired by the Palladian staircase from John Soane's 1819 design. palladiana del proyecto de John Soane de 1819.
A modern interpretation of a classic design that offers a simple and elegant solution.
